Festungs Königstein

Yesterday we went to Festungs Königstein which is about 30km south-east of Dresden near the Czech border.

The fortress was built in the 13th century then rebuilt and improved in later periods. Sitting atop a hill about 240m above the River Elbe, you can see from the pic it has awesome views of the Sächsische Schweiz.

The grounds of the fortress house Europe's biggest open-air military history museum.

We spent a few hours walking around with our handy audio aid, spoken by a nice old British chap named Jonathon, who filled us in on all the histrory of all the different buildings within the Fortress.

The view was stunning, it was really interesting seeing all the history, and the 150m well was very impressive.
